The exhibition will allow the viewer to probe more deeply, to try to determine/unveil what can be learned when male and female artists – working in similar veins but with distinct personal artistic visions – are shown side by side. While exploring similarities between the artists, the viewer will also be challenged by personal and societal preconceived stereotypes. For more information on this exhibition and its artists, please visit: www.laceandgunpowder.com

Marking Moments
April 13
– May 18, 2012
Artists: Jack Dale and Danny Saathoff
Opening Reception: Friday April 13, 6:00 – 8:00pm
Artist Talk: May 10, 7:00pm
Viewers are asked to slow down and take a moment, or rather ‘view’ the moments being made during their visit to “Marking Moments” in the Inez Greenberg Gallery. Abstract expressionist, Jack Dale and kinetic artist, Danny Saathoff each strive to capture a sense of life’s fleeting moments in their respective mediums. Dale’s masterful use of color combined with excellent composition, line and texture create paintings which often reflect a sense that there is a story beneath the layers that must be carefully peeled away in order to reveal. Likewise, Saathoff’s sometimes whimsical, sometimes poignant sculptures fascinate the senses and force us to slow down to see what happens next and to understand the slowness of change.

Unveiling: Thre Women Eplore Identity
May 24
– June 22, 2012
Artists: Jessica Matson-Fluto, Leila Rastegar, Sherry Lee Short
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 24, 6:00 – 8:00pm
Artist Talk: June 14, 7:00pm
In this exhibition, three women artists explore personal and cultural history in a variety of two-dimensional media. Each distinct artistic voice presents, through a series of works, narratives surrounding women’s identities. Jessica Matson-Fluto’s small-scale paintings present human forms suspended in abstract layers of paint. “I choose to create these dream-like scenarios as a method of self-discovery and also desensitization to memories of a haunting life-altering event,” states Matson-Fluto. Of her current work, Leila Rastegar says, “In the blue series, the women are surrounded by ornament yet isolated from it; they themselves are not colorful or adorning ornament. The clothing they wear does not reflect their individuality.” Sherry Lee Short’s ongoing series of self-portraits both mimic and challenge classical representations of women by men in art. She states, “These portraits are the beginning of my dialogue with patriarchal culture’s expectations of me as an aging or ‘older’ woman.” |

Unravel
March 8 – April 29, 2012
Artist: Laura Andrews
Opening Reception: Thursday, March 8, 6:00pm – 8:00pm
“Unravel” takes its themes from the relationship between people and the natural world, and the dependence and anxiety that this relationship produces. As a recent recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant, Andrews was able to shadow several hunters and visually document their activities. That experience gave her an intimate glance at our human role within the natural world, and allowed her to see her subjects from a fresh perspective. “Animals and plants cannot help but be natural, yet people have less surety of their position in relationship to nature,” states Andrews. |

Spirit of Solitude
June 7– July 22, 2012
Artist: Kurt Seaberg
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 7, 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Seaberg’s beautifully done lithographs create a sense of tranquility. “Printmaking, especially lithography, attracts me for the endless artistic possibilities it offers to transform and manipulate the drawn image,” states Seaberg. Many of his landscapes have a certain softness while still maintaining a great deal of depth. Seaberg also adds, “One of the tasks of the artist, I feel, is to remind us where our strength and power lies- in beauty, community and a sense of place. Nature has always been a theme and source of inspiration in my work, in particular the spiritual qualities that I find there. My hope is that my art will evoke the same feelings that arise in me when I contemplate the mystery of being alive in a living world: humility, gratitude and a sense of wonder for what I believe is truly sacred.” |
